My planned trip to Manchester on Saturday had to be aborted, but I made it along to Newcastle on Sunday and spent a couple of hours in The Strawberry, adjacent to St. James' Park. Pre-match, as you can imagine, it was absolutely heaving and had it not been for the televised Arsenal - Sunderland match, I think we would probably have retreated to the roof terrace for some fresh air on what was a lovely afternoon.
Great atmosphere in the pub and it's another one which prominently features CAMRA's LocAle campaign on the pump clips - and also had a blackboard showing:
The selection on Sunday was:
- Mordue - No 9 (complete with NUFC strip pump clip)
- Deuchar's
- Wylam - Collingwood Festival ale (read all about it here - http://www.wylambrewery.co.uk/view_news.php?news=15)
- Jarrow - Rivet Catcher
- Tyne Bank - Castle Gold
Definitely worth a visit if in the area - all the beer was in perfect condition, and, despite the crowds, the staff coped admirably - and cheerfully.
Back home, the only local outlet I've been in over the last week was the Tor-na-Coille Hotel, where I had a very poor Wildcat. Deeside Drinks Emporium had bottles of Jarl, which made for a decent substitute for the real thing.
Also locally, the Deeside Piper published the following article about the Glenkindie:
I've started distribution of the latest North Sea Ale - Broch done, plus the golf club and Deeside Drinks in Banchory - the rest will be later on this week.
Cheers,
Ian
