Recent trips

From http://iansaleadventures.blogspot.com/

We were down in the West of Scotland a couple of weeks ago and paid a visit to the Red Deer, right next to what used to be the Auchenkilns roundabout, but is now in the middle of Scotland's biggest road works project. They had two beers on tap - the ubiquitous Deuchar's and Rudgate's Ruby Mild - both in good condition. The food wasn't bad either - worth popping in if you're in the area.

Yesterday, we travelled down to Edinburgh for a theatre trip and managed to sneak a few ales in as well. We had supper last night in the Cafe Royal - they had a wonderful pint of Pivo Estivo on, plus 3 other ales - Deuchar's (of course), Merlin and one other I've now forgotten. There was a plaque at the table we were sitting at, acknowledging that the restaurant scene from Chariots of Fire was filmed here:

After the show, we nipped in to the adjacent Theatre Royal, who had 8 ales listed on their blackboard, although only 5 of them actually available at that time - Broughton Summer Ale, Three Sisters, Stewart's 80/-, Deuchar's (again) and Merlin. We tried them all, but the condition of the beers here bore no comparison to the Cafe Royal, with the Summer Ale particularly poor. Some of the cast from Les Miserables seemed to enjoy themselves at the next table, however.

Today, we had lunch at the Guildford Arms - 9 ales available plus a cider - all of them looking bright and lively. Our favourite was Morland's Original Bitter, but I'd have been happy to quaff most of the others - Bitter & Twisted, London Pride, Arran AB, Merlin (again), Deuchar's (again), Dark Island, Stewart 80/- and Avalanche.

Next stop Aviemore tomorrow - probably Cairngorm beers in the Cairngorm Hotel, but perhaps sneak one in at Dalfaber, and maybe the Bridge as well.
