Allendale

We were in Northumbria this weekend for the first Allen Valleys Folk Festival and managed to squeeze in a few interesting beers in Allendale.

The village has 3 pubs in the town square - the Allendale Inn, the Kings Head and the Golden Lion. The former is where the younger crowd seem to hang out. Acceptable Landlord and Hobgoblin on handpull.

The Kings Head is a Marstons pub - seemed OK, but we were much more attracted to the adjacent Golden Lion, which not only had a better feel about it - and more ales on tap - but was also running a mini beer festival this weekend. Normally, they have 5 ales on - including Theakston's Best, Landlord and Wylam Gold Tankard - but this weekend the selection also included:

Our favourite was definitely Jarrow's Caulker.

We took a walk down to see the Allendale Brewery, but it was Saturday afternoon and it was closed:

Our accommodation at Deneholme Training Centre was also hosting some events for the Folk Festival and had one ale on handpull:

This was my second favourite beer of the weekend.

Popped in to Berwick on the way home and had a bite and a quick beer in the Leaping Salmon, a Wetherspoon's outlet. Ruddles Best and Ringwood.
