Braeval Beer Festival

From http://iansaleadventures.blogspot.com/

Anyone heading to Nairn this weekend? The list of beers can be viewed at http://www.braevalhotel.co.uk/Bandstand%20Beer%20Fest%20Ale%20List%202013%20-%20Website.pdf

100 beers listed from 45 different breweries. Pleased to see that this includes Gundog's IPA - we've become great fans of this brewery over the last year or so. It seems the brewery owners arrive in the Deeside area every couple of months, unannounced, with a vanload of beer. Steve, mine host at the Douglas Arms in Banchory, always takes a few casks, because he knows any time he puts it on, it sells out quicker than any other ale. Last weekend it was their Toon Army for the first time and it didn't disappoint.

Wetherspoon's recently announced their half year profits to the end of January:

Their results are not too bad considering the state of the economy generally, but note their comment in the penultimate paragraph about taxation, which they calculate accounts for 43.7% of their turnover. This implies that, without tax, they would be selling their beer for almost half its current price! That would bring it down to almost the same amount as the vouchers we get when we renew our CAMRA membership then? Free beer anyone?

In this month's What's Brewing I noticed that CAMRA Chairman has vowed this year to visit each of the 7 pubs that have appeared in the GBG every year:

  • Ingham Arms, Petty France, London
  • Star, Netherton, Northumberland
  • New Inn, Kilmington, Devon
  • Queen's Head, Newton, Cambridgeshire
  • Roscoe Head, Liverpool
  • Square & Compass, Worth Matravers, Dorset
  • Star Tavern, London
Sounds like a good plan. Why haven't I been to any of them?
