Mallorca Oktoberfest

From http://iansaleadventures.blogspot.com/

Spent the last week in Mallorca golfing, so not much ale consumed, but we were at the La Liga match between RCD Mallorca and Granada last Sunday and were walking back to the city centre when we came across one of the large public parks, in which they were advertising Palma's very own Oktoberfest. We had to try it out, didn't we?

There was one large marquee - so, although it could hold a lot of people, it was obviously on a much smaller scale than the real thing in Munich. Inside, however, the layout was identical and there was a typical oompah band playing and the serving wenches were dressed appropriately too. The main sponsor seemed to be Paulaner, which I seem to recall caused a lot of damage to my brain cells when I was in Munich.

It was early evening and the marquee was fairly empty when we got there, although most of the tables were reserved for the evening bash. We had a quick beer then moved on:

The only other news I have this week was an article I spotted in the business pages of yesterday's Times. It was all about SAB Miller's plans to produce a cheaper beer for the locals in Swaziland. Apparently it takes the average worker there 18 times as long to earn enough to buy a beer than their counterpart in America.

Miller are going to expand distribution of their Chibuku brand to 10 different African countries. It's an opaque beer, produced with maize or sorghum and is sold in one litre cartons and has a shelf life of only 5 days. During that period the strength rises from 0.5% to 4% as the liquid ferments - would CAMRA class this as a real ale equivalent? Carton conditioned indeed. Here's the article:
