Saturday's Times listed what they considered to be the "Best Pubs for Summer" - not necessarily real ale, of course, but there were 4 Scottish ones listed:
Courtesy of Colin Kilgour, I was reading the latest edition of the Cleveland branch's quarterly publication, It's Your Round, and, being a numbers man, I was interested in their Beers by Numbers page:
The Cleveland branch (http://clevelandcamra.org.uk/) has 600 members. I'm not sure what the latest membership stats are for our branch, but I seem to recall a number of approx. 350 being quoted one upon a time? Geographically, Cleveland branch only covers 400 square miles, whereas ours is almost 10 times greater - over 4,300 square miles according to Wikipedia.
Sticking with the comparisons, they have 300 pubs in their area serving real ale, whereas we have less than half of that. Their ratio of 0.75 pubs per square mile is over 20 times better than ours!
Cleveland's population is probably not too dissimilar to ours, which means they have about twice as many real ale pubs per head of population.
Not really a level playing field I know, given the urban nature of most of Cleveland, but it's interesting to see how other CAMRA branches are doing.
